Finding Moments of Self-Care in the Chaos: Tips for Busy Moms

Embracing Self-Care Even When Life Gets Hectic

The Importance of Self-Care for Moms

Listen, I get the demanding roles of being a mom, wife, friend, and career woman, juggling various responsibilities. One thing motherhood has taught me is that moms are the most hardworking, deserving people around, yet they are so hard on themselves. Between three kids, two dogs, and a full-time career, I regularly put myself last. Especially when I had very little ones around. Over the past few years as my kids have grown, I've been on a journey of self-discovery and self-love, and I would love for you to join me too. So, let's dive in.

1. Prioritize Mini Self-Care Rituals

Self-care doesn't always have to be an elaborate, time-consuming task to make you feel good. Self-care is what you need when you need it. It’s not someone else's prescribed rituals or routine. As someone who used to run Wellness Committees, I've learned that we often associate self-care with something elaborate such as spa days and massages. Self-care can include those things and hey if that’s what you need habitual go out and get it. I am not here to diminish anyone’s self-care needs. However, for some regular spa trips can become taxing and expensive. Instead, start small. Work on incorporating self-care moments throughout the day. Simple things like taking deep breaths, enjoying a moment of quiet, or indulging in a favorite snack can make a real difference. Do what makes you happy!

2. Carve Out "Me Time"

I know, I know. How in the world am I going to find "me time" with my hectic schedule? This is where you need to put on your "selfish hat." I take my dogs out for a walk on a trail while listening to a good podcast. I could take my kids, but then I'm no longer alone. I consider it a win-win because at least I completed one of my daily chores (walking the dogs) while unwinding. Are you a morning person? Can you wake up a little earlier and have your coffee while admiring the view? Utilize those little nap times and dedicate some time just for you. There’s no shame in a good Netflix binge session with some good snacks in the evening when the kids have gone to bed. Take that time for you.

3. Create a Self-Care Corner

In the midst of your busy life, having a designated space for self-care can serve as a tranquil oasis, a place where you can retreat to recharge and rejuvenate. Imagine it as your own personal haven, tailored to your preferences and needs.

Set aside a cozy corner or a small area in your home where you can escape for a few moments of peace. This space doesn't need to be elaborate; it's about creating an atmosphere that brings comfort and solace. Here are some ideas for what your self-care corner could include:

  • Books: Fill your corner with books that inspire you, whether it's fiction, motivational reads, or self-help titles. Allow yourself to get lost in the pages and find respite from your daily routine.
  • Calming Scents: Incorporate aromatherapy by placing scented candles, essential oil diffusers, or potpourri in your corner. Fragrances like lavender, chamomile, or citrus can evoke feelings of relaxation.
  • Cozy Blankets: Drape soft and plush blankets over a chair or cushion, inviting you to snuggle up and unwind. Having a comfortable throw within arm's reach can create a sense of coziness.

Remember, your self-care corner is a reflection of your unique preferences. It's a place where you can find solace, reflection, and the rejuvenation you need to tackle your day with a refreshed spirit.

4. Delegate and Ask for Help

As a multitasking mom, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking you have to do it all on your own. But remember, seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness. Reaching out for assistance can create space for more meaningful moments.

Tap into your support network – your partner, family, friends, and even neighbors. Communicate your needs and share responsibilities. Delegating tasks isn't about shirking your duties; it's about valuing your time and well-being. Remember, you matter just as much as everyone else.

Embrace the idea that you don't have to be a superhero 24/7. Allow others to contribute and experience the joy of helping you. Letting go of the need to do everything by yourself can lead to more balanced days and a happier you.

5. Embrace Mindfulness Techniques

In the whirlwind of mom life, mindfulness offers a lifeline to serenity. By practicing mindfulness, you can manage stress, improve focus, and stay present in the moment. It's an amazing tool, and I truly believe mindfulness will become the next well-being trend, given its powerful effects. Here are a few mindfulness techniques that can work wonders:

  • Deep Breathing: Take a few moments each day to practice deep breathing. Inhale deeply through your nose, allowing your abdomen to expand. Exhale slowly through your mouth. Feel the tension melt away with each breath.
  • Meditation: Dedicate a few minutes to meditation. Find a quiet spot, close your eyes, and focus on your breath or a calming mantra. Let go of worries and be present in the stillness. Feel every part of your body by mindfully thinking of how each part of you feels in that moment. It's interesting how we notice we're hunched or stiff without even realizing it.
  • Journaling: Write down your thoughts, feelings, and observations in a journal. This can be a creative outlet for self-expression and a way to gain insights into your emotions.

Engaging in these mindfulness practices doesn't demand much time, but the benefits are profound. They offer a brief respite from chaos, allowing you to cultivate a sense of calm in your daily routine.

6. Nurture Your Passions

As a mom, it's natural to prioritize your family's needs, but nurturing your passions is equally important. Reconnecting with hobbies and interests you love not only brings you joy but also sets a positive example for your children.

Reflect on activities that once ignited your enthusiasm. Whether it's painting, gardening, playing a musical instrument, or dancing, carve out time to engage in these pursuits. Remember, your passions are an essential part of who you are beyond your roles as a mom and nurse.

Pursuing your interests can reignite your spirit, inspire creativity, and provide a sense of accomplishment that extends beyond your caregiving responsibilities. Embracing your passions is a form of self-care that nurtures your soul and enriches your well-being.

7. Celebrate Small Wins

In the whirlwind of mom life, it's easy to overlook the small victories. However, celebrating even the tiniest wins can boost your self-esteem and sense of accomplishment.

Give yourself credit for daily achievements – from completing tasks on your to-do list to handling a challenging moment with grace. Each small win contributes to your growth and well-being. And remember, you're keeping one or more little people alive! That might seem small but consider all the effort and dedication that goes into raising kids. YOU ARE A ROCKSTAR!

Acknowledging these accomplishments is a form of self-appreciation that fuels your confidence and motivation. You're doing an incredible job, and celebrating these milestones reinforces the value of your efforts.

A Happier You is a Happier Family

As you navigate the intricate dance of motherhood, nursing, and life's demands, remember that prioritizing self-care isn't selfish; it's a gift you give to yourself and your loved ones. By creating a self-care corner, seeking support, embracing mindfulness, nurturing your passions, and celebrating your achievements, you're not only cultivating a happier you but also a happier family.

When you invest in your well-being, you radiate positivity and resilience. Your actions inspire your children, strengthen your relationships, and create a harmonious atmosphere. With every step you take on this journey of self-discovery and self-love, you're nurturing a foundation of well-being that benefits everyone around you. You are also teaching your children the importance of self-care and role modeling such important resilient behavior.

Take these lessons to heart and weave them into the fabric of your daily life. By finding balance, embracing self-care, and celebrating your own worth, you're setting an extraordinary example of vitality, strength, and happiness for yourself and those you hold dear.
